Ulpian was a Roman jurist and senior imperial official whose writing helped define ideas of justice, legal duty, and public and private law. Much of his work survives through the sixth-century Digest of Justinian.

A LESSER-KNOWN DETAIL

His legal influence is astonishingly large: passages drawn from Ulpian make up roughly a third of Justinian’s Digest. He was killed in the imperial palace by members of the Praetorian Guard.
