Miguel de Unamuno was a Spanish essayist, novelist, poet, philosopher, and longtime rector of the University of Salamanca. His work wrestled with faith, doubt, identity, mortality, and the tension between reason and the human hunger for meaning.

A LESSER-KNOWN DETAIL

His public independence repeatedly cost him his position. He was removed as rector, exiled to the Canary Islands, escaped to France, returned after dictatorship fell, and was later removed again.
