John Keats was an English Romantic poet whose odes and narrative poems joined sensuous imagery with questions about beauty, mortality, imagination, and truth. His major work was written in only a few intense years before tuberculosis ended his life at twenty-five.

A LESSER-KNOWN DETAIL

Before committing himself to poetry, Keats trained in medicine and qualified as an apothecary. He worked in London hospitals and was licensed to practise, but chose verse over surgery.
